Yummy Cheesy Gluten Free Dinner Rolls

A healthy diet is key to a healthy life

When it comes to health and exercise, the old saying is true: “you can’t exercise your way out of a bad diet.”  To lead a healthy lifestyle, a healthy diet essential.

This doesn’t mean your meals must be boring or limited.  This recipe is an example of a gluten-free Red Lobster-like cheesy dinner roll that makes a healthier choice.  Yum!   Fun sites like FoodBabe.com and Flavcity.com are great websites for learning about healthier food choices and to find great recipes.

You don’t have to be gluten sensitive to enjoy this recipe. It is also keto friendly, and suggestions are available for dairy-free options also.

As part of a healthy lifestyle, you should read the labels of every food item before making your choices.   Look to see if the food is free of hydrogenated oils, vegetable oils and trans fats – all are inflammatory and can clog your heart.    Instead, choose healthier fats such as coconut, sesame, avocado, walnut, or grapeseed oil.

Check to see if your food contains high amounts of sugar.  Sugar is an addictive ingredient that makes you come back again and again for the product.  Minimize sugar in any form and watch for ingredients listed under different names to make it look like less sugar is being used.  Some of the common sugars you will see and want to avoid include: dextrose, fructose, galactose glucose, sucrose, and lactose.   Other forms of sugar include beet sugar, brown sugar, coconut sugar, cane sugar, corn syrup, ethyl maltol, and fruit juice concentrates.

There are other ingredients you want to avoid.  Watch for:

Ø  Sodium Nitrates which are used as preservatives in lunch meats and hot dogs. When mixed with high heat, this ingredient has been shown to create cancer-causing chemicals called nitrosamines.

Ø  Food coloring dyes.  Yellow dyes #5 and #6, Blue dye #1 and #2, and Red dyes #3 and #40 are abundantly found in cereals and cookies.   They have also been linked to learning disabilities and concentration disorders in children. Many countries in Europe have banned these dyes.

Ø  BHA and BHT are chemicals found in crackers, beer, cereals and butters. They are petroleum based and are shown to cause stomach cancer in mice.  The U.S Department of Health and Human Services classifies them as potentially human carcinogens.

Ø  MSG, also known as monosodium glutamate, and hydrolyzed vegetable protein are used as flavor enhancers. These substances can cause headaches, chest pains and weakness. They also block the “I’m full” hormone in the brain, causing you to eat more than you need.

Ø  Artificial sweeteners such as Aspartame -- also known by their brand names NutriSweet and Equal -- are found in over 6,000 foods.  These sweeteners are 180 times sweeter than sugar and can cause headaches, dizziness, memory loss, and even epileptic seizures. Many studies have linked Aspartame to multiple cancers.   There is a healthy, natural sweeter choice – Stevia, which is a safe, low calorie substitute for sugar.

Ø  Caramel coloring is made by treating sugar with ammonia. It is an additive thought to be carcinogenic in humans.

The bottom line for creating a healthier diet for yourself is that you must take control.   Read every label.   Avoid pre-packaged foods at all costs.   Shop from the outside aisles of the store for fruits and vegetables and more natural foods, minimally processed.  If you don’t know what something is or can’t pronounce it, chances are it is an unhealthy ingredient!
