Treatment For Traumatic Brain Injury

When you think about concussions, typically a hard hit to the head and the individual knocked unconscious comes to mind.  Like football players.  Direct hits to the head is a major reason for traumatic brain injury as is head traumas caused by car accidents, bicycle falls, soccer and basketball injuries.

Traumatic brain injury or TBI can be caused by a direct hit to the head or a substantial jolt to the body that causes the head to suddenly move forward and backward, causing the brain to hit against the skull, be bruised and swell. If neck and back pain is involved or a whiplash, the concussion may not be diagnosed and the individual may later have chronic health issues.

Repetitive blows to the head like football tackles, the soccer bounce off the head, bike racing falls, or general rough play can lead to what is termed Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (MTBI).  These often go undiagnosed and repeated MTBIs can lead to altered brain function called Chronic Traumatic Brain Encephalitis (CTE).

After determining there are no broken bones or hospitalization required, an exam by an Atlas Orthogonal upper cervical chiropractic specialist is recommended to check for misalignment of the delicate cervical spine, the delicate, small vertebrae that hold and support the head and neck movement.  Severe misalignments can occur with or without a concussion.  Misalignments in the neck can hamper the brain and the central nervous system to communicate with the rest of the body, setting in motion possible future pain and chronic illnesses.

For athletes and competitive sports enthusiasts, experts recommend pre-injury testing to provide a comparison after injuries. This data allows for better assessment of cognitive ability, balance, coordination and brain function.  Knowing when to safely return to normal activities and play is critical. A tool used for this testing is called Clear Edge Brain Health Assessment.
