Sugar Is Linked To Cancer

The Link Between Sugar and Cancer

New research indicates that removing sugar and excess processed carbohydrates from the diet is essential to good health and disease prevention and regression.   One new study, published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation, identifies excessive sugar is one of the primary causes of metabolic cell changes in the body consistent with the initiation and promotion of cancer.   This new research also indicates that removing sugar and processed carbs from the diet and depriving the cells of them could work to reduce cancer.

The average American consumes 150 pounds of sugar and 200 pounds of grain products -- which quickly convert to sugar – annually, according to USDA studies. All these tasty, refined carbohydrate foods like bread, pasta, crackers, cereal and processed grains are really hidden forms of sugar.

Sugar and carbohydrate-rich diets are addictive.  That’s because within minutes of consuming sugar and carbs, your body goes through a roller coaster.   The brain cues the body to use sugar to fuel its cells. The endocrine system releases hormones such as insulin, adrenaline and cortisol to try to get the elevated sugar in the blood and tissues under control.   Insulin forces the sugar into storage within the cell, but often does its job too well, causing available glucose levels in the brain to be depleted. The brain then sends emergency signals telling the body to release more cortisol and adrenaline to increase the levels of glucose in the blood.

This roller coaster of a cycle is responsible for the insatiable cravings a high carb/sugar diet generates.  Sugar also affects the parts of the brain that modulate opioid and dopamine receptors in the nervous system similiar to alcohol.  Thus, the body becomes addicted, demanding carbohydrates frequently.

A diet high in sugars and carbohydrates is not the only cause of disease and cancer.   There are many other factors that contribute to cancer initiation and promotion including chemical and radiation exposure, chronic stress, poor immune system, and insufficient nutrients in the diet.

Cancer is a complex disease with variables we can’t always control.  Choosing organic foods, grass fed meats, healthy fats and minimizing sugars and processed foods is an excellent way to build a healthy body. Eliminating exposure to harmful pesticides and chemicals are very important in prevention. And reducing stress where you can, saying no to too many demands, finding time to relax, enjoying family and friends, music, and nature help the body to stay healthier.

Sugar and carbs cause inflammation, the real culprit to chronic illnesses. In addition to reducing these from your diet, regular chiropractic care reduces stress on the nervous system allowing the body to function more optimally, strengthening the immune system.
