Recent studies have revealed that muscle atrophy, or decreased muscle mass, is linked to patients with sciatica.

Reduction in muscle size happens when someone's range of motion becomes limited due to a medical condition or after an injury. Additional reductions in mobility and muscle strength happen once atrophy sets in. Low-back pain patients often compensate for their weaker muscles in ways that often cause additional injury.

Because of this, it is important to treat the sciatica before the condition causes additional deterioration. Sciatica is caused by either a disc herniation or an injury that pinches the sciatic nerve and chiropractic treatment, unlike medication, chiropractic actually deals directly with the cause of sciatica. During treatment, the spine is realigned and adjusted, removing nervous system interference, significantly relieving pain by reducing pressure on the sciatica nerve. Regular chiropractic care is a good way to prevent and recover from sciatica.

There is hope for patients with sciatica. A recent study indicates that patients can return to work sooner, recovering faster from sciatica flare ups, when they choose chiropractic care. The study involved 44 workers in Norway who reported to the hospital with severe pain due to sciatica. Prior to their hospital visit, most had experienced pain for more than three weeks.

The chiropractor at the hospital evaluated each patient's range of motion, gait, and posture and palpated the lumbar spine. Various joint adjustments to the spine were performed by the chiropractor in addition to adjustments on limbs injured due to compensations for the pain. Soft tissue soreness was treated with ice. In the hospital, patients were treated every day and for the first two weeks after their release, they received treatment three times a week. While additional visits were required for some patients, in the majority of cases 14 or fewer treatments were required.

Within three weeks, a return to full-time work was achieved by 91% of patients. Two returned on a part time basis. The researchers came to the conclusion that when orthopedic surgeons and chiropractors collaborate, the benefits can be potent. You can begin living a full life again when you end your pain due to sciatica with chiropractic care getting to the core of the problem naturally, without drugs or surgery.
