How To Improve Brain Health

Are you caring for a family member that has Dementia, Alzheimer’s traumatic brain injury or other neurodegenerative disease?  Or are you worried it could happen to you?   You are not alone.

According to the Alzheimer’s Association, in 2020 more than 5 million Americans 65 and older are suffering from Alzheimer’s and Dementia. Eighty percent are 75 or older and two thirds over the age of 65 are women.  Alzheimer’s is the 6th leading cause of death in America and the 5th leading cause of death in persons over 65.

The costs to society are tremendous – estimated at more than $305 billion in 2020 not including the cost for unpaid caregivers. Medicare and Medicaid are expected to cover only 67% of the total cost.  Out of pocket costs for families is skyrocketing,

Since there is no cure these neurodegenerative diseases, the only thing that makes sense is prevention.  Here are some suggestions to keep your mind healthier:

Go to school or continue to learn new things. Constant learning and challenge is vital to brain health. Education helps to strengthen the brain connections and delay the onset of memory loss and other neurodegenerative symptoms.

Enjoy social interactions. This may be a bigger challenge during this pandemic, but meeting platforms like face time and zoom can help you stay connected.. Stimulating conversations and laughter do wonders for the brain. Begin a hobby that can be shared with someone else, play games, or learn to sing or play an instrument.

Keep blood pressure in healthy ranges and enjoy regular physical activity, especially outside, whenever possible. Notice what is going on around you.

Eat a healthy diet, eliminating or minimizing processed foods, sugar, refined oils and grains. Choose simple whole foods with multiple colors. This helps to reduce inflammation and potentially diseases like diabetes and obesity.  Consider supplementing your diet with whole food vitamins and minerals and Omerga 3 fish oil.

Get regular upper cervical chiropractic care to reduce stress on the nervous system.  Studies have shown increased blood flow and flow of cerebral spinal fluid to and from the brain and the spine after adjustments.  Atlas Orthogonal upper cervical chiropractic care is very precise and gentle with no popping or cracking.

Additional options available to optimize your brain health at Foresight Chiropractic include:

1) BEMER vascular therapy to decrease inflammation and increased blood flow.  This means greater health and vitality, less stress, quicker recovery, and better sleep 2) BrainTap guided meditation is a quick and easy way to relax and optimize your brain’s peak potential. Backed by neuroscience and research, braintapping’s guided meditation creates a symphony of brainwave activity and feeling of calm focus.
