Back Pain Relief During Pregnancy

Back, hip, and leg pain seem to go hand-in-hand with pregnancy.  Studies have shown somewhere between 50% to 80% of women experience some form of back or hip pain during their pregnancy with the pain levels ranging from mild to severe.  This can become an ongoing and chronic issue if not properly addressed.

The third trimester is the most common time expectant mothers will begin experiencing low back pain, when a hormone called Relaxin is released. This hormone is in preparation for childbirth, relaxing the ligaments in the pelvis and widening and softening the cervix. For some women, the pain can begin as early as 8 to 12 weeks when the center of gravity begins to change and ligamentous structure alters. For women who have had back pain prior to their pregnancy, it can put them at higher risk for back and hip pain or be more severe.

Getting regular chiropractic care, particularly Atlas Orthogonal gentle upper cervical care, before and during pregnancy can relieve not just neck pain, back pain and hip pain—naturally and gently—but conditions like digestive issues, headaches and sciatica for example. Removing stress from the nervous system and aligning the spine to help the body function optimally is beneficial for mother and baby. Regular gentle chiropractic care also helps with a healthier pregnancy and delivery. Gentle chiropractic adjustments can help the baby assume an optimal birthing position, reducing the risk of having a breech birth or a delivery requiring the use of instruments such as forceps or vacuum extraction.
